Some Credit Union History

The first Scottish Credit Union was founded in Drumchapel by Bert Mullen, a painter & decorator, in February 1970. Originally named Western Credit Union it later became Drumchapel Credit Union Ltd.

Today, Bert Mullen's legacy is that there are now 109 credit unions in Scotland serving over 250,000 people with over £210m in savings and £180m out on loan. Approximately one in twenty people in Scotland are members of a Credit Union compared with one in sixty five in Britain. In Glasgow, one in five of the population are members.

The first Credit Union in Clackmannanshire was Tullibody Credit Union. In 2004 it merged with Alloa & Sauchie Savings Group to form Clackmannanshire Credit Union which now covers the whole of the county.

We currently have collections in Alloa and Tullibody but we hope to extend that to other communities as we continue to grow.
